Data Backup Services
The Research Systems Group offers two main data backup options:
- LSA/ITS TSM Backups for Researchers and Research Data
A shared service operated by LSA and ITS where LSA subsidizes the
cost of TSM backups
of data derived from externally funded research.
- Sophisticated backup service with the most advanced features.
Based on IBM TSM.
- Back up data from Linux, MacOS X, and Microsoft Windows.
- 1 TB of backup space at no cost for data derived from externally funded research. *Note: This service is based on
the amount of space occupied by backups, not the size of the data
that is backed up; see the
Getting Started
page for details.*
- Additional space available with approval from your department
chair. This is based on a cost sharing arrangement with the College.
- Self-service restores.
- Encryption available for sensitive data.
- Data is backed up first to disk and then to tape.
- Backups are replicated between two off-campus data centers (currently, MACC and Arbor Lakes).
- This service is intended for data derived from externally funded
research. If you would like to use this service to backup data from
other sources, please contact the office of the Associate Dean for
Budget and Finance, or use one of the other available backup
services.
- This service is not suitable for laptop computers: it requires
that the machine is on at the same time every day, that it have an
on-campus IP address, and that it have a wired network connection
with a minimum speed of 1 Gbps. If you have a laptop with data
that needs to be backed up, please see the list of other
backup solutions.

Test accounts are also available to departmental IT staff. Click for more information
- LSA rsync Backup Service
- Back up data from LSA-managed Red Hat Linux machines. (It may also be possible to back up data from other machines if SSH and rsync are both available and configured correctly; however, this is not officially supported by LSAIT.)
- Intended for groups with data 5 TB or less.
- Intended for backing up HPC clusters and research group fileservers. (Not intended for backups of workstations or laptops.)
- No cost.
